Celtic knot patterns

　ケルト文化と聞いて、皆さんは何を思い浮かべるでしょうか？　多くの人が、おそらく「ケルティック・ノット」と呼ばれる、あの複雑で美しい結び目文様を想像するのではないでしょうか。始まりも終わりもない、ひたすら続いていく線で構成されたその文様は、ただの装飾品というにはあまりにも深い意味を湛えています。

When you think of Celtic culture, what comes to mind? Many people probably think of the complex and beautiful knot patterns known as “Celtic knots.” These patterns, made up of endless lines with no beginning or end, are filled with meanings too deep to be considered mere decorative items.

Imagine. In the past, deep in the forests and surrounded by rugged coastlines, people must have felt the grandeur and cycle of nature firsthand in their daily lives. Night comes, and morning comes again. The seasons change, seeds sprout, bear fruit, and then return to the soil. Just like this knot pattern, everything is connected without interruption. I can’t help but feel as if their view of life and the universe is embodied in each and every one of these lines.

What attracts me most about this pattern is the complete absence of any breaks. No matter how intricately intertwined it may be, it always forms a single, complete line. This reminds us of the sense that “everything is connected,” something we modern people tend to forget. Isn’t this the same with our lives, for example? Joy and sorrow, meetings and partings, may at first glance appear to be independent events, but in fact they are all connected, influencing each other and shaping who we are. At times, I feel a slight nostalgia for the message of “recycle” that this pattern embodies. Perhaps what is lost, what has come to an end, can be reborn in another form. Am I the only one who tries to read such hope into these intertwined lines? I’m sure that their views on life and death and belief in the afterlife were deeply connected to the background to their creation of this pattern. Death is not the end, but the beginning of the next life. Perhaps this idea of ​​cycle is embodied in these unbroken lines.
