The mysterious allure of stone circles

　広大な土地に、巨大な石が神秘的な配列で立ち並ぶストーンサークル。その中でも特に有名なのは、やはりイギリスのストーンヘンジでしょうか。これらの巨石建造物は、ケルト文化が花開くはるか昔、つまり紀元前3000年頃から紀元前2000年頃にかけて栄えた「巨石文化」の壮大な遺産だと言われています。ケルト人自身がこれらを築いたわけではありませんが、彼らにとって、この場所は計り知れないほど神聖な意味を持つ空間として認識され、重要な儀式を行う場として代々受け継がれてきたようです。

Stone circles are vast tracts of land filled with gigantic stones arranged in mysterious patterns. The most famous of these is undoubtedly Stonehenge in England. These megalithic structures are said to be the magnificent legacy of the “Megalithic Culture” that flourished from around 3000 BC to 2000 BC, long before the Celtic culture flourished. This precise astronomical alignment was in amazing perfect harmony with the Celts’ unique view of time. For them, time did not progress in a straight line, but rather in a constant cycle, like the phases of the sun and moon and the changing of the seasons. The stone circle was likely a grand attempt to inscribe this cycle of time into the earth using the nearly eternal material of stone, and to pass on this wisdom to successive generations. It is believed that its construction took an incredible amount of time, spanning hundreds of years, and involved enormous amounts of labor. It was an “architectural project that transcends generations,” something we cannot imagine today; perhaps it was a living structure, passed down from generation to generation without ever being completed.
