Architecture that transcends generations

　サグラダファミリアという建築物について考えるとき、いつも胸に迫る感動があります。それは、単なる美しい建造物というだけでなく、世代を超えて受け継がれる夢と情熱の結晶だからかもしれません。

Whenever I think about the Sagrada Familia, I am always deeply moved. Perhaps this is because it is not just a beautiful building, but the crystallization of dreams and passions passed down through generations.

　ガウディがこの壮大なプロジェクトに着手してから、すでに百数十年の時が流れ、その建設には五世代以上もの建築家たちが関わってきました。想像してみてください、ひとりの人間が設計図を描き始めたものが、その生涯では決して完成せず、次の世代、また次の世代へとバトンが渡されていく光景を。まるで、いにしえの中世の大聖堂建築が、現代に蘇ったかのようではありませんか。しかし、この場合は、ただの再現ではないのです。ガウディの「継承による創造」という哲学が、脈々と息づいている。私はそう感じずにはいられません。

Over a hundred years have passed since Gaudi began this grand project, and more than five generations of architects have been involved in its construction. Imagine this: one person begins drawing up the blueprints, never completing it in his lifetime, and the baton is passed on to the next generation, and then the next. It’s as if the ancient cathedral architecture of the Middle Ages has been brought back to life in the modern day. However, in this case, it is not just a reproduction. I cannot help but feel that Gaudi’s philosophy of “creation through inheritance” lives on.

　それぞれの時代を生きた建築家たちは、もちろん自分たちの持つ最高の技術と、その時代の建築に対する深い解釈を持ってこの大聖堂に向き合ってきました。しかし、彼らが共通して抱いていたのは、ガウディが残した原初のビジョンに対する、とてつもない敬意と愛着だったのではないでしょうか。まるで、ガウディという偉大な師の魂が、彼ら一人ひとりの心の中に宿り、その手を通して現代に語りかけてくるかのようです。それは、単なる「設計図通りに作る」という作業を超え、ガウディの思想や美学を深く理解し、未来へと繋ぐための創造的な挑戦だったに違いありません。

Of course, architects of each era approached this cathedral with their own utmost skills and a deep interpretation of the architecture of their time. However, what they all shared was an incredible respect and affection for the original vision left behind by Gaudí. It was as if the spirit of that great master, Gaudí, resided in the heart of each of them, speaking to the present day through their hands. This was no doubt a creative challenge that went beyond simply “building according to the blueprints,” but rather involved a deep understanding of Gaudí’s ideas and aesthetics, and a connection to the future.

　特に興味深いのは、現代の最先端技術が、この歴史的な建築プロジェクトにどれほどの革新をもたらしているか、という点です。例えば、今は当たり前になった「3Dモデリング」の技術。ガウディの時代には、精巧な模型や図面でしか表現できなかった、あの複雑で有機的な曲線美も、今やコンピュータの中で自由に動かし、隅々まで検証できる時代です。さらに、建物の構造を詳細に解析する「コンピューター解析」は、安全性はもちろんのこと、ガウディが目指した自然で力強い構造を、より確実に実現するための強力なツールとなっています。そして、巨大な石材を寸分の狂いもなく加工する「精密な石材加工機械」の登場は、ガウディが構想しながらも、当時の技術では実現が困難だった多くのデザインを、ついに現実のものとしつつあります。

What’s particularly fascinating is how much modern cutting-edge technology has brought innovation to this historic architectural project. Take, for example, the now-commonplace technology of 3D modeling. In Gaudi’s time, the complex, organic curves could only be expressed with elaborate models and drawings. Now, they can be freely manipulated on a computer and inspected in detail. Furthermore, computer analysis, which analyzes the building’s structure in detail, is a powerful tool that not only ensures safety, but also more reliably realizes the natural, powerful structure Gaudi envisioned. And the advent of precision stone processing machines, which can process massive stone blocks with precision, is finally bringing to fruition many of Gaudi’s designs, which were difficult to realize with the technology of the time.

　私は、この「伝統と革新の調和」こそが、サグラダファミリアという建築の本質であり、その魅力の源だと考えています。古いものと新しいものが対立するのではなく、互いを高め合い、支え合っている。ガウディの描いた夢を、現代の技術が形にし、そして未来の世代へと受け継いでいく。これほどロマンに満ちた建築物語が、他にあるでしょうか。

I believe that this “harmony between tradition and innovation” is the true essence of the Sagrada Familia architecture and the source of its charm. The old and the new are not in conflict, but rather enhance and support each other. Modern technology has given shape to Gaudi’s dream, and it will be passed on to future generations. Is there any other architectural story as romantic as this?

　完成までにはまだ時間がかかると言われています。もしかしたら、私たちが生きている間には見届けられないかもしれません。でも、それでいい、と私は思います。なぜなら、サグラダファミリアは、完成すること自体が目的ではないのかもしれないからです。完成へと向かう、果てしない「継承と創造のプロセス」そのものが、この建築の存在意義であり、私たちに語りかける最も雄弁なメッセージなのだと。そう、この建築は、私たちに、夢を諦めないこと、そして、未来へと希望を繋ぐことの大切さを、静かに教えてくれているような気がしてなりません。

It is said that it will take some time before it is completed. Perhaps we won’t even be able to see it in our lifetimes. But I think that’s okay. Because perhaps the completion of the Sagrada Familia is not its purpose. The never-ending “process of inheritance and creation” leading to completion is itself the reason for the existence of this building, and the most eloquent message it can convey to us. Yes, I can’t help but feel that this building is quietly teaching us the importance of never giving up on our dreams, and of holding on to hope for the future.
