Holiness in the Digital Age: Technology and the Future of Faith

　ふと、こんなことを考えたことはありませんか？　私たちの信仰や精神世界は、この目まぐるしいデジタル化の波の中で、一体どこへ向かっているのだろう、と。現代社会は、スマートフォン一つで世界中の情報にアクセスできる時代。そんな中で、オンライン礼拝、VR（仮想現実）を使った巡礼体験、あるいはNFT（非代替性トークン）として表現される新しい宗教芸術といったものが次々と生まれています。

Have you ever wondered: Where are our faith and spiritual worlds headed in this dizzying wave of digitalization? In today’s society, we can access information from all over the world with just a smartphone. In this climate, we are seeing the emergence of new things such as online worship services, pilgrimage experiences using VR (virtual reality), and new religious art expressed as NFTs (non-fungible tokens).

　これらの新しい形式を目の当たりにすると、私たちは戸惑いを覚えるかもしれません。伝統的な信仰の聖なる本質が、デジタル空間の軽やかさの中で薄れてしまうのではないか、という不安。あるいは、これまで閉ざされていた精神的な世界が、技術の力によってもっと多くの人々に開かれるのではないか、という希望。そのどちらも、もっともな感情だと思います。デジタルと聖性の関係は、決して単純な「良いか悪いか」で割り切れるものではないのです。

When we see these new forms, we may feel confused. We may worry that the sacred essence of traditional faith will be diluted in the lightness of digital space. Or we may hope that the power of technology will open up spiritual worlds that have previously been closed off to more people. I believe both of these feelings are legitimate. The relationship between digital and the sacred cannot be simply classified as “good or bad.”

Online worship services offer an opportunity to pray together with loved ones, overcoming physical distance. Or, someone with a disability who cannot make a pilgrimage may be able to experience the sights of holy sites through VR and be deeply moved. These are undoubtedly “new possibilities” brought about by technology. However, at the same time, whether digital scenes can completely replace the value of “physical experiences” such as the atmosphere that can only be felt in person, the weight of history that can be felt with one’s own skin, and the warmth of community that can be felt with all five senses is another matter entirely.

What we must not forget is that technology itself is a “neutral entity,” neither good nor evil. Just as a sharp knife can produce delicious food in the hands of a chef, or become a lethal weapon, the value of digital technology can also change significantly depending on the intentions and ethics of those who use it. Consider the preservation of cultural assets. Preserving deteriorating murals and sculptures as digital archives through high-precision 3D scanning is an excellent initiative to pass on their value to the future. This may be similar to how printing technology has made it possible to reach a wider audience with sutras that were once copied by hand by artisans.

　しかし、その一方で、あまりにも簡単に聖なるものを複製し、消費される対象として扱ってしまうと、その本質的な「聖性」が薄まってしまう危険性もはらんでいます。例えば、誰もがアクセスできるデジタル空間に、安易に聖地を再現しただけのものは、人々の畏敬の念や神聖な感情を呼び起こすでしょうか？　むしろ、その特別性や稀少性が失われ、単なる「コンテンツ」として消費されてしまうかもしれません。私たちは、デジタル化の恩恵を受けつつも、何を守り、何を尊重すべきかを常に問い続ける必要があります。

However, on the other hand, if sacred things are too easily replicated and treated as objects to be consumed, there is a danger that their essential “sacredness” will be diluted. For example, would a simple reproduction of a sacred place in a digital space accessible to anyone evoke a sense of awe or sacred emotion in people? Rather, their specialness and rarity may be lost, and they may be consumed as mere “content.” Even as we enjoy the benefits of digitalization, we need to constantly ask ourselves what we should protect and what we should respect.

　では、この問いに対する答えはどこにあるのでしょうか。私は、デジタルとアナログ、最新技術と古からの伝統の間に、創造的な統合の道を探ることが、21世紀に生きる私たちの大きな課題だと感じています。どちらか一方を否定するのではなく、それぞれの持つ強みを理解し、調和させること。それが、豊かな未来の文化を築く鍵になるのではないでしょうか。

So where does the answer to this question lie? I believe that a major challenge for us living in the 21st century is to find a way to creatively integrate digital and analog, cutting-edge technology and ancient traditions. Rather than rejecting one or the other, we need to understand and harmonize the strengths of each. I believe this will be the key to building a prosperous culture for the future.

The unique tradition of rebuilding the shrine every 20 years, known as “Shikinen Sengu,” is carried out using the same ancient methods and methods as it has for over hundreds of years. There’s no sign of an aggressive adoption of the latest technology here. However, it’s this strict adherence to tradition that teaches us, living in the modern age, the value of unchanging things and the wisdom of coexisting with nature.
